'Pop-Up' Bookshop opens at Carryduff Shopping Centre
February 17, 2016
Local Northern Ireland publisher, Emain Publications has opened up their 1st Bookshop at Carryduff Shopping Centre. ‘The Bookshop’, supported by the Department for Social Development and Lisburn & Castlereagh City Council sells unique local children’s books, offers local authors an opportunity to showcase their work and provides a creative space for authors of all ages to write, get published and take part in community activities.
Emain Publications was established in 2012 by local author Shauna Dunlop to publish stories she had written about her baby daughter Orlagh Rose, after she passed away with a rare illness when she only 9 months old. Four of the forty Orlagh Rose stories have now been published and the first title ‘The Lemon Sugar Baked Cookies’ which has sold hundreds of copies will be read by Shauna on Saturday, to celebrate the opening.
‘The Bookshop’ will also sell many of the other titles published by Emain, including the amazing ‘Ferrari Adventure’, written by young Aidan Gormley form Omagh, at only 7 years old; the unique mystery adventure novel ‘Russ on the Suss’ by Mo Maher from Co. Down, inspired by her grandson and the unforgettable tale about ‘Chansey the Chicken and the Plum Tree’, authored by well know local teacher John Conlon from Co. Fermanagh.
If you dream of being a published author, call in and chat to the Emain Publications team. Have a peep through the door of ‘The Writing Room’ and see how this space could be of benefit to you. ‘The Bookshop’ is also interested in receiving submissions from local self-published authors.
‘The Bookshop’ is the first of it’s kind in Northern Ireland, a bookshop where not only can you buy books, but also a place to write and become a published author yourself, maybe even see your own book on the bookshelves!
‘The Bookshop’ begins a new creative era in the Carryduff local community, by bringing together expertise in publishing, particularly publishing of young authors, as well as providing an accessible space to read, to write, to learn, to buy a unique Northern Ireland developed children’s book or even to enjoy a drink and a snack. This new inititiatve can only be of benefit to the community and will hopefully ignite what will soon become a thriving creative hub, right here on our doorsteps.
Alderman Allan Ewart, Chairman of Lisburn & Castlereagh City Council’s Development Committee said “I am delighted to see the first of our ‘Pop Up’ businesses opening in the new Council area. The initative, which is funded through the Department for Social Development and Lisburn & Castlereagh City Council, has received a lot of interest from budding entrepreneurs. The funding has allowed small businesses to test the water in their chosen markets in vacant retail units on the high street with the aim of helping them sustain their business in the long term. It will also support regeneration plans across Lisburn City Centre and the centres of Dundonald and Carryduff.
"As the first ‘pop up’ to open we wish Emain Publications good luck and hope the business prospers and grows providing Carryduff with a central hub for people to meet up, enjoy a good book or even further a passion to write and publish their first ever novel!”
Emain Publications The Bookshop opened Saturday 23 January 2016 at Unit 16, Carryduff Shopping Centre, Church Road, Carryduff, Co. Down, BT8 6RM. More details at www.emainpublications.com.
