Northern Ireland 100 Years: Lisburn Museum’s NI Centenary Quilt Programme
September 15, 2021
Lisburn & Castlereagh City Council secured a grant from The Shared History Fund, to deliver a Northern Ireland Centenary Quilt Programme between October and December 2021.
This programme is one of the council’s initiatives to mark the centenary of Northern Ireland. The National Lottery Heritage Fund is responsible for distributing the funding.
Aim: To reflect the significance of 100 years of Northern Ireland through individual and group work to design fabric panels. These will be combined into an archival textile piece for the museum’s collection.
Who is it for? Community groups, schools, businesses and individuals within the Lisburn and Castlereagh area may apply. Individuals may submit one 12” fabric square.
Themes: Your piece must address one of the following themes: Home, Landscape, Place, People, Leisure, Work, Community, Art and Culture. Participants will be guided by the facilitator and textile artist, Davina Callen. Each square will depict aspects of 100 years of Northern Ireland that are important to the programme participants. Pieces must be accompanied by short text (max 150 words) with title, theme and an explanation of the design choice.
Capacity Building: Relevant historical exhibitions and talk programmes are available online at www.lisburnmuseum.com. “How to” resources will also be available online under “NI Centenary Community Quilt” once the programme commences.
Guidance on Materials: A blank 12” square will be supplied to each participant. These may be hand or machine stitched applique, patchwork, embroidered or painted. Groups are expected to supply their own materials as far as possible. Lisburn Museum can provide individual entrants with embroidery / sewing thread, needles and scissors if needed.
Work with a Textile Artist: Participants will have the opportunity to join one workshop session at Lisburn Museum or via zoom. Dates of sessions will be released closer to the start of the programme.
