New guide to Hilden War Memorial published by Lisburn museum

A new guide exploring the history of Hilden War Memorial was recently launched by the Mayor, Alderman Stephen Martin.  The leaflet weaves together research, photographs, text and stories of the lives of the men who feature on the memorial.  It also provides a colourful and accessible history of the monument.  Free copies of the guide are available at reception in the Irish Linen Centre & Lisburn Museum.

Speaking at the launch, Mayor Martin said: “For over a decade I have visited Hilden War Memorial every November to pay my respects to the men and women of Hilden and Lambeg who died in the Great War.  Last year I was delighted to see the newly-refurbished memorial, which was work carried out as part of the Council’s Local Investment Plan.  This guide offers a fascinating glimpse into the history of the memorial, and the lives of the people it remembers.”

Cllr Scott Carson, Chair of the Council’s NI Centenary Working Group, said: “I must commend History Hub Ulster’s Nigel Henderson, Richard Graham and Gavin Bamford for their work on researching the names on the memorial and the Museum team for bringing the stories to life in the guide.  In Hilden War Memorial’s centenary year, it is wonderful that so much has been done to preserve the monument and its history.”

Councillor Sharon Skillen, Leisure & Community Development Chair, speaking at the opening said: “I was delighted to see teams from across the council collaborate on the restoration of the monument. This new guide from our Museum service carries on this work, and ensures that the fascinating stories of the men and women who lived and worked in Hilden, Lambeg and Glenmore are told to future generations.”
