Mayor's Carnival Parade and Family Fun Day - Saturday 12th May

Join The Right Worshipful the Mayor of Lisburn & Castlereagh, Councillor Tim Morrow and thousands of carnival revellers tomorrow (Saturday 12 May) for the City of Lisburn & Castlereagh’s Mayor’s Carnival Parade & Family Fun Day 2018.
This year’s festivities launches the 200th Birthday celebrations of philanthropist and art collector, Sir Richard Wallace. Up to 10,000 people are expected to descend on the city’s streets and the Mayor of Lisburn and Castlereagh, Councillor Tim Morrow, warmly invites you to be one of them.
“The 2018 City of Lisburn & Castlereagh Mayor’s Carnival Parade & Family Fun Day is a joyful celebration of Sir Richard Wallace’s legacy, our people, our city and our shared history.
I am looking forward to seeing the streets of Lisburn transformed into one big colourful party and to welcoming hundreds of revellers to our city. I hope that everyone will come along on Saturday 12 May to enjoy the Mayor’s Carnival Parade as well as the Family Fun Day festivities in Wallace Park,” said Councillor Morrow.
Besides being one of the most, lively events on Northern Ireland’s cultural calendar, the Mayor’s Carnival Parade & Family Fun Day is carrying on the Sir Richard Wallace’s Philanthropic Spirit. Funds raised from the celebrations will benefit Mayoral Charities, Habitat for Humanity and Corrymeela Community.

Dancing, performance, music & masquerade – join the Carnival fun
A highlight of the day will be Mayor’s Carnival Parade. Revellers can expect a noisy, vibrant procession of fantastical carnival floats and a spectacular throng of carnival performers, street entertainers and masqueraders shimmying to the addictive rhythms of samba and carnival marching bands.
Excited for one of the city’s main cultural attractions, Alderman James Tinsley, Chair of Leisure & Community Development, Lisburn & Castlereagh City Council said: The Mayor’s Carnival Parade is a fantastic celebration which is enjoyed by all. It is one of Northern Ireland’s biggest carnival parades. I can’t wait to see the carnival creations designed by leading international carnival artists, hundreds of our city’s school children and community groups all depicting Sir Richard Wallace’s legacy in an unrivalled display of street arts and creativity.”
Family Fun Day 12.30 – 5.30pm, Carnival Village, Wallace Park
Carrying on Carnival’s celebrations will be the ever popular Family Fun Day, in the beautiful lush Wallace Park, gifted to the people of Lisburn & Castlereagh by Sir Richard Wallace.
The park will throng with a rich assortment of live entertainment and arena acts along with the opportunity to refuel with a range of foods on offer.
Live musical entertainment by bluegrass band The Poachers, Latin classical guitarists Los Dramaticos and The ever popular Diva Dolls will provide the soundtrack to the afternoon.
A dedicated Kids’ Zone will host a busy programme for families to enjoy. Activities include interactive performances by C21 Theatre Company performing an African tale ‘The Awongalema Tree’, face painting, balloon modelling and hands–on arts and craft workshops. Children can also get closer to nature and have their curiosity buzzing with demonstrations from the Flying Falcons birds of prey, Mantilla Environmental Education, RSPB exhibition, make a bug hotel with the Conservation Volunteers and cuddle the baby animals from Blackberry Farm Petting Zoo.
Adrenaline junkies can feel a rush of excitement with Trialstar boasting an impressive line–up of motorcycle trial riders of the past, present and the future fairground attractions and assault course activities. Car enthusiasts can get close to a cavalcade of retro cars and vintage military vehicles. While craft enthusiasts can discover a carefully–chosen selection of talented local artisan makers, representing the best of local traditional and contemporary handmade skills. Some of the stallholders will also be demonstrating their craft, so it’s a great opportunity to find out more about their techniques too.
Finally if you think your doggy has talent, the ever popular Lisburn & Castlereagh City Council Dog Show, will put your canine friend centre stage.
