Mayoral Charity spell-bound by funding boost

November 27, 2015

A delighted Mayor of Lisburn & Castlereagh City Council, Councillor Thomas Beckett and Dame Mary Peters were spell-bound to receive a cheque for the Mayor’s Charity ‘Mary Peters Trust.’

The Mayor’s Charity received a spell-binding £5,431.00 boost, from proceeds raised through the sale of wristbands and donations from Food Traders at the council’s recent Twilight Nights by Fairy Light celebrations on Thursday 29 and Friday 30 October.

The event, which was a bewitching attraction for thousands of Halloween revellers now sets to directly benefit Northern Ireland’s aspiring athletes.

The Right Worshipful the Mayor of Lisburn & Castlereagh City Council, Councillor Thomas Beckett said: "To have raised such a large amount of money from one event is a great achievement.

“Twilight Nights by Fairy Light is a favourite among families and young people. Everyone who attended played a part in making this wonderful civic event a huge success.  It is hugely fitting that money raised will be directly invested in giving our future young athletes access to the best support services so they can prepare for major championships in their chosen sport”.

Former Mary Peters Trust recipients include golf Major winners Rory McIlroy, Graeme McDowell and Darren Clarke in their formative years plus Dr Janet Gray MBE, Niall McVeigh who became World Dwarf Badminton Champion, swimming sensation Sycerika McMahon; and athlete Sally Brown.
