November 20, 2018
Lisburn & Castlereagh City Council updated the inscriptions of the fallen Armed Forces Personnel on the relevant Council War Memorial across the Lisburn Castlereagh area in advance of the 100th Anniversary of Armistice Day.
A total of six new names were added with each War Memorial located in Lisburn, Hillsborough and Moira having two names inscribed.
Brothers Rifleman Albert and Rifleman Thomas Hawthorne both lost their lives in World War One and their names are inscribed on the Lisburn War Memorial.
Petty Stoker Officer Thomas Graham who died in World War Two and Private James Wilson who died in World War One were added to the Hillsborough War Memorial.
Private James Bell who died in World War One and Guardsman Trevor Bell who died during the uprising at Aden in 1967 were added to the Moira War Memorial.
Councillor Nathan Anderson, Chairman of the Council’s Corporate Services Committee, speaking about these local heroes said: “It is an honour for the Council to have had the opportunity to add the names of these six courageous Armed Forces Personnel to the appropriate war memorials. I would like to thank the family members who provided the information of their loved ones to us. This action has ensured that they will be forever remembered for their bravery and dedication by the local community.
“These brave men died during active service in one of the Great Wars or in the case of Guardsman Trevor Bell during a peace enforcement operation in Aden (now part of Yemen). War Memorials provide a place for friends and family to pay their respects to loved ones. They also bring the whole community together each and every November, to remember the enormous sacrifices made by service men and women and their families.”
Lisburn & Castlereagh City Council periodically updates the names of the Fallen on its war memorials in Lisburn, Glenavy, Hilden, Hillsborough and Moira in conjunction with the Royal British Legion.
