Local lady started 'Wonder Scents' through the Go for It programme
February 13, 2017
Councillor Uel Mackin, Chairman of the Council’s Development Committee visited local lady Wendy Houston to hear about her experience as a ‘Go for it’ participant.
Wendy was very pleased with the assistance and support provided by one of the Council’s partner organisations to develop her FREE business plan. Wendy wanted to start a new chapter in her life and self-employment offered her the ideal opportunity to decide on her work life balance.
She met Patricia, a business adviser at Lisburn Enterprise Organisation, and received assistance with her free business plan. It showed that her business idea would make a profit and she could receive a wage.
Wonder Scents was then set up. This local business owned and managed by Wendy makes scented candles and bath bombs as well as offering a range of tartlet candle burners and gift baskets. Wendy makes her own products in a variety of fragrances including lime, fresh cotton, jasmine, citrus burst and bubblegum.
Speaking after the visit, Councillor Mackin, said: “To have the opportunity to meet up with a participant of the Go for it programme was very beneficial. Wendy gave me an insight into this council managed programme. Not everyone wishes to work for someone else and instead prefer to set their own goals, which self-employment allows. This is exactly what the Go for It programme helped Wendy to do.
“She wanted to work but during hours suitable to her home life. Through her meetings with the business adviser she was able to put together a business plan to show she could successfully make a business producing her natural bath bomb and candle products. Should any resident of the Lisburn Castlereagh area wish to start their own business please contact the Go for It team on 0800 027 0639,” concluded Councillor Mackin.
Wendy regularly attended markets to sell her products and also accepts orders through her Facebook page facebook.com/Wonder Scents. Business has been so good that Wendy is now relocating from her home to a unit in Penny Lane Market, Lisburn.
