Local charity Dreamscheme wins an 'Oscar' for its voluntary service

August 26, 2021

Dreamscheme, a local youth charity, is to receive a Queen’s Award for Voluntary Service. Mayor Martin hosted a reception for its volunteers on Monday night to celebrate this achievement at Lagan Valley Island.

This prestigious award recognises Dreamscheme's commitment to making a difference to the lives of young people at risk. The dedication of its volunteers since 2004 has helped grow this charity.  It now supports more than 300 young people each year.

The Mayor, Alderman Stephen Martin during his term in office aims to involve younger residents in the civic life of our community. The Mayor said: “Acknowledging the receipt of this ‘Oscar’ in the field of voluntary service by a Castlereagh based youth organisation is an important opportunity I am delighted to be involved with.”

In the past year, despite having to adapt its services due to the pandemic, 35 volunteers provided over 4,000 hours in voluntary service to support the community. Mayor Martin said he enjoyed spending time with the volunteers and hearing of their experiences and their plans for the future.

Dreamscheme helps young people improve their self-confidence, learn new skills and understand the importance of supporting their community. Alderman Martin said: “I am proud of what this amazing group of young people has achieved and the invaluable support given to those in need over the last 16 years.  It is the on-going effort of volunteers that contributes so much to improving the quality of life for everyone right across our community.”

Stephen Mullan, CEO of Dreamscheme added: “We are absolutely thrilled to receive the Queen’s Award for Voluntary Service. Volunteers have always been at the very centre of our work. Many have supported young people directly in one of our local youth groups, while others have provided vital support behind the scenes. This prestigious award publicly recognises the outstanding contribution of our volunteers – past and present.”
