Lisburn named as Ireland’s Best Kept Large Urban Centre
June 22, 2022
Lisburn has been named as Ireland’s Best Kept Large Urban Centre at Ireland’s Best Kept Town Awards.
Mayor of Lisburn & Castlereagh City Council, Councillor Scott Carson accepted the award on behalf of the local community.
Mayor Carson said: “I want to thank all of those who have helped Lisburn win this award from Council workers to local businesses and community groups to individual households. It has been a real community effort and the pride shown in our local area through this joint approach was recognised by the judges.
“The judges also acknowledged that our City Centre was clean and vibrant and that our green spaces are well maintained. These comments show the tremendous work put in by teams across the Council such as Parks & Amenities and Environmental Services but also to everyone who contributes by taking pride in where they live on a daily basis.”
Doreen Muskett President of the Northern Ireland Amenity Council said: “We are thrilled to see Lisburn beating off strong competition from Dundalk, Athlone and Belfast City Centre, to win the Best Kept Large Urban Centre category, especially since it is the first time the city has qualified for the competition.
“These awards create links between community involvement, our natural environment and our wellbeing, helping us to recognise the value of our biodiversity and coming together to play our part in making our own parts of the country places we are proud to call home.”
Now celebrating its 25th anniversary (excluding 2020 and 2021 when no competition took place), Ireland’s Best Kept Towns is an all-island competition that sees the best towns in the Northern Ireland’s Best Kept competition compete against their cohorts in the Republic of Ireland’s TidyTowns competition.
Prizes were awarded across various categories with Enniskillen winning Ireland’s Best Kept Town and the Best Overall, all-Ireland titles, Inistioge in Co Kilkenny awarded Best Kept Village and Abbeyleix in Co Laois lifting the Best Kept Small Town category.
