Lagan Valley Island shines blue to celebrate 75 years of the UN

October 24, 2020

Lagan Valley Island will light up blue tonight to mark the 75th anniversary of United Nations Day.

The lighting of Lisburn & Castlereagh City Council’s civic headquarters will mark 75 years since the founding of the United Nations (UN) organisation in October 1948.

The Chair of the council’s Corporate Services Committee, Alderman Paul Porter, said: “Tonight, we take this opportunity to acknowledge the significance of the UN and reflect on its history; remembering its continued achievements across the world and its commitment to defend human rights for all.

“The unprecedented global health crisis that we find ourselves in and the severe economic and social impact that it brings has meant that the urgency for all countries to come together, to fulfil the promise of our united nations, has rarely been greater.”

Vice-Chair of the council’s Corporate Services Committee, Alderman Stephen Martin, continued: “This anniversary comes at a time of great turbulence. However, it is also a reminder that challenges, no matter how difficult, can also become opportunities for positive change and transformation. We all have a part to play in making effective change happen.”
