International European League Table Tennis returns to Lisburn

Lisburn & Castlereagh City Council is pleased to announce that an important European League Table Tennis match between Ireland and Lithuania is to be staged in Lisburn Racquets Club on Tuesday 20th March at 7.30pm.  

This provides an exciting opportunity for fans and spectators to see top class table tennis at close hand. The Irish side recently recorded an impressive 3-0 victory over San Marino in Dublin so come to Lisburn in a buoyant mood for this crucial League Match.  

Speaking about the match Chairman of the Council’s Development Committee, Alderman Allan Ewart, MBE said:  “The Lisburn-based International gives a chance for everyone to see Northern Ireland’s Commonwealth Table Tennis Men’s Team players in action just before they set off for the Games in Gold Coast, Australia on Monday 26th.  We are delighted that Lisburn will be host to this International European League.”

The NI Commonwealth Games Team of Paul McCreery, Ashley Robinson, Owen Cathcart and Zak Wilson was selected several weeks ago, with all except Paul currently in training in Sweden under the guidance of National and Commonwealth Coach John Murphy.  While Zak is not available for the Irish match against Lithuania due to German Club duties, it is widely anticipated that the Irish Team will feature Ashley, Owen and Paul along with Dublin’s Gavin Maguire.   The Team will be formally announced next week.

Alderman James Tinsley, Chairman of the Council’s Leisure and Community Development Committee, said: “We enjoy a long-standing relationship with Lisburn Racquets Club and it is great to see such a high profile match being played in our City.  We are fortunate to have so many great sporting facilities on our doorstep and we are keen to expand our leisure offering throughout the area. This latest event is a welcome addition to an already packed sporting calendar.”

Mayor, Councillor Tim Morrow said, “It would be great to see everyone come out and support the Team and wish the NI Commonwealth boys the best of luck at the Gold Coast.  The match is free to attend so make sure you get the date your diary and come along.”
