Inspirational Hand Cyclist to compete in the Lisburn Coca-Cola HBC Half Marathon

June 7, 2017

Local hand cyclist, Ted McKibbin will be one of approximately 6,500 competitors lining up to take part in the 35th Lisburn Half Marathon on Wednesday 21st June, in the hope of inspiring others to take up the challenge regardless of any barriers they may face.

A keen sports person all his life and a well-known soccer player, Ted was paralysed from his waist down following a cycling accident in 2013, which has since led him into the sport of hand cycling.

The resilient and determined hand cyclist, along with his specialised ‘machine', will compete in this year's event for the fourth time.

Speaking in the run up to one of Northern Ireland's largest sports participatory events, Ted said: "The past four years have been extremely challenging, with many ups and downs along the way, but my love of cycling and passion for sport has provided me with a lifeline in what has been a life changing experience.

“As a competitive road cyclist prior to my accident, as well as being a part of a huge cycling fraternity, I was eager to get back on the saddle, so hand cycling was an obvious transition.  Hand cycling has given me a focus in life and is a huge part of my daily routine, which helps me both physically and mentally. I would encourage anyone who is going through a similar situation to get involved and give it a go.  It really has given me a new lease of life!

“I am looking forward to the Lisburn Half Marathon, which is just one of many events that I compete in, and one in which I very much enjoy. The atmosphere is just fantastic and I hope it will be even bigger and better this year round.”

Speaking about the courageous hand cyclist, Chairman of the Council's Leisure and Community Development Committee, Councillor Tim Morrow said: "As a keen cyclist myself and a huge advocate for promoting the benefits and importance of physical activity, I am truly inspired by Ted's story.

"Ted is a shining example to many, not just in terms of sports participation, but to everyone who is challenged physically and mentally every day of their lives, proving that with a positive outlook and perseverance barriers can be overcome.

"The Council endeavours to provide events, programmes and initiatives that encourage inclusivity and diversity.

"I would like to wish Ted all the best for the Half Marathon and I look forward to seeing him set off on the 21st", concluded Councillor Morrow.
