Holocaust Memorial Day

January 27, 2020

On Friday 24th of January, as part of the council’s Good Relations Programme, a service of remembrance was held to mark 75 years from the liberation of Auschwitz-Birkenau.

Alderman James Tinsley, Chairman of the council’s Leisure and Community Development Committee said:  “I think it is very important that all generations continue to honour those who lost their lives during Nazi occupation.  By recognising this year’s theme for Holocaust Memorial Day of ‘Standing Together’ we foster a sense of good relations among everyone in our communities.”

The keynote speaker, Brendan Quail is Regional Project Manager of the Vulnerable Syrian Refugee Consortium at Bryson Charitable Group. He has over 10 years of experience in the community and voluntary sector working with asylum seekers, refugees and other vulnerable groups. His background is international development and academia.

The event concluded with a ceremonial candle lighting, and the reading of the seven commitments from the Stockholm Declaration, which is committed to preserving the memory of those who were murdered in the Holocaust.
