Lisburn and Castlereagh City Council highlights the risks of accidents in the home

December 2, 2021

Lisburn & Castlereagh City Council is offering free Home Safety Checks to residents in the local community.

To avail of this service you must have children under the age of five living in the same household or be 65 years old or older. Those suffering with an illness or disability can also benefit from the service.

During the visit, a Home Safety Officer will offer advice, tips and guidance on keeping your home safe. The officer will assess the potential dangers around your home and, where appropriate, free equipment will be offered to make your home safer.

Chair of Environmental Services, Councillor Andrew Ewing said: “None of us want to think of something tragic happening to our loved ones at home so it is important that we don’t ignore the risks and do everything we can to help prevent an accident happening.

“Some causes of accidents in the home are well known such as chip pans, open fires and stairs, however many are not.

“The Council would like to make residents aware of the dangers and hazards that are present in your home environment. Putting interventions in place can help you to minimise the risks so that you and your family are safe.”

To book your Home Safety Check please contact the Home Safety team on 028 9244 7847 or email home.safety@lisburncastlereagh.gov.uk

The Home Safety Coordinator is also available to carry out talks to groups. Any groups interested in this can contact the Home Safety Team on the details above.

Groups can decide whether talks take place in person or virtually via zoom. If a talk is carried out in person, COVID-19 safety measures will be in place such as masks having to be worn, room ventilation and social distancing measures in place.
