Enhance your garden’s biodiversity with a free bird box
March 31, 2021
Lisburn & Castlereagh City Council has partnered with the Probation Board for NI and RSPB NI to provide its residents with the opportunity to collect a free bird box to paint and put up in their garden.
Residents are encouraged to collect a bird box when visiting one of our local parks as part of their daily exercise. They will be offered on a first come, first served basis.
Alderman Michael Henderson MBE, Chairman of the council’s Leisure & Community Development Committee, said: “We would like to thank the Probation Board staff and those on Community Service for producing a variety of bird boxes over the last few months. We will have 10 bird boxes at a central location in each of the council’s seven District Electoral Areas over the next few weeks. It is important that as the nesting season approaches we try and play our part in providing and protecting the nesting habitat of birds.
“When you get your bird box home please position it in a location that offers the birds a clear flight path to the nest and faces between north and east. To prevent damage to trees please attach the bird box with a nylon bolt or wire instead of nails; and tilt it slightly forward to prevent rain getting in,” concluded Alderman Henderson MBE.
PBNI Assistant Director Stephen Hamilton, said: “The Probation Board is delighted to assist Lisburn and Castlereagh City Council with the bird box project. The work that is carried out both benefits the local community and gives those sentenced an opportunity to give back and make reparation for what they have done.”
Bird boxes will be available at the below locations at the stated time and date. A council officer will be present to offer guidance if needed. We would also like to remind residents to leave any hedge trimming or tree works until after the nesting season, which ends on 31st August.
