Council Supports Motor Neurone Disease Awareness Day

Lisburn & Castlereagh City Council is proud to light its civic headquarters blue on Sunday 21st June to mark Motor Neurone Disease Awareness Day.

Alderman Paul Porter, Corporate Services Committee Chairman, said: “Last year we adopted the Motor Neurone Disease (MND) Charter, in support of local people living with this terminal disease and their carers. Therefore, it is very fitting we publicly show our support by lighting Lagan Valley Island blue while working to fulfil our commitment to the Charter. We want to ensure those affected by MND receive a swift response to their needs and access to good quality care and support.

“As a rapidly progressing disease MND is fatal. Unfortunately, there is no cure at present therefore, it is important to make people aware of the needs of those living with MND and their carers to ensure a high quality of life.  By lighting our building blue, we hope people will talk and strive to find out more about this condition which is at present widely misunderstood.”

The MND Charter was created to ensure those with MND receive the right care, in the right place, at the right time.

Alderman Stephen Martin, Vice-Chair of the Corporate Services Committee added: “If those who are living with MND receive the right support and care it can make a difference to their lives and those of their families.  As a council we will lobby to ensure those affected receive an early diagnosis, have access to quality treatments and care while being treated with dignity and respect.”
