Council marks the 70th Anniversary of the United Nations (UN)

The Mayor of Lisburn & Castlereagh City Council, Councillor Thomas Beckett welcomed the Principal of Wallace High School, Mrs Deborah O’Hare, pupils and representatives from the United Nations Association of Northern Ireland (NUA-NI) to Lagan Valley Island to celebrate the 70th anniversary year of the founding of the United Nations (UN) organisation.

 

To mark this historic year, pupils from Wallace High School presented a commemorative copy of the UN Charter to the Mayor, Councillor Thomas Beckett. The Charter was signed on 26 June 1945 and came into force on 24th October 1945, at the conclusion of the United Nations Conference on International Organisation.

 

Speaking at the presentation, the Mayor said, “It gives me great pleasure to welcome you all here today to mark the 70th anniversary of the UN.

 

“Known as ‘a beacon for all humanity’, we take this time to acknowledge the UN and reflect on its history; remembering its continued achievements across the world and its commitment to defend human rights for all, regardless of race religion, nationality, gender or sexual orientation.

 

“I would like to pay tribute to and commend the dedicated and talented staff of the United Nations who go the extra mile to help those in terrible situations and who make the ultimate sacrifice in the line of duty – these people symbolise the true meaning of the UN Charter.

 

“It is great to see the talented pupils from Wallace High School here today and I look forward to hearing about your involvement in the Model United Nations events.

 

“Finally, on behalf of the Council I would like to thank the United Nations Association of Northern Ireland for inviting us to mark this significant occasion,” concluded the Mayor.  

 

Mrs Deborah O'Hare, Principal of Wallace High School, also commented on the School’s involvement. She said, “I am extremely pleased to have Wallace students involved in this important commemoration. I would like to commend the excellent work of the students involved in the Model United Nations and thank Karen Brett, the teacher who makes this all possible”.
