Council Marks 'Men's Health Week'
June 13, 2018
Lisburn & Castlereagh City Council is encouraging men to be more health aware as part of Men’s Health Week, which is running from 11th – 17th June.
As part of Men’s Health Week, the Council is holding a range of activities throughout the week for its male staff and elected members.
Councillor Nathan Anderson, Chairman of the Council’s Corporate Services Committee added: “The theme of Men’s Health Week (MHW) this year is ‘One small step for man,
one giant leap for men’s health’. All too often men overlook their own health and wellbeing and we want to encourage our male staff and elected members to be more aware of their own health and take simple steps to improve it.
“During this week the Council is offering staff and elected members a number of health promotion initiatives including health ‘MOT’ checks, and health awareness talks and events to include cancer awareness, mental health awareness, drug & alcohol awareness. To round off the week there will be a Walking Football Tournament for all members and staff of all ages.
“Health checks should not be reserved for when you are feeling unwell. Some symptoms such as high blood pressure may not produce any obvious physical symptoms, however early detection and treatment can help ensure that the heart remains healthy and that the risk of heart disease or stroke are greatly reduced,” concluded Councillor Anderson.
As part of MHW men are being encouraged to take at least one step towards better health and awareness raising campaigns are taking place across the UK and Ireland. The key question the Council is asking during MHW to staff, elected members and residents is ‘what’s your small step going to be?’ It wants everyone to work together to do one small practical thing to improve their health.
The Mayor, Councillor Uel Mackin, added: “I am delighted that men within the Council are being encouraged to be more health aware. There is nothing more important than your health and the Council offers a wide range of services to support all staff. I would also like to encourage all our male residents to take that step to play their part in improving their own health.”
