Council hosts Reception for Commonwealth Games Team

Lisburn & Castlereagh City Council was delighted to host a special reception to honour the achievements of local athletes, officials, support staff and coaches who proudly represented Northern Ireland at the 2018 Commonwealth Games in the Gold Coast in Australia last month.

The Council area had one of the largest number of team representatives, despite being one of the smallest in geographical size, making the Games a good news story for the City.

Speaking at the reception, Deputy Mayor of Lisburn & Castlereagh City Council, Councillor Hazel Legge, said: “It is a privilege to host a reception to honour our local team members on their fantastic achievement representing Northern Ireland at the Commonwealth Games in Australia.  Achieving a place on the team is an amazing feat for all involved as it highlights the commitment and dedication of local athletes and their coaches who train relentlessly to excel within their sport on an international stage.

“On behalf of the Council, I would like congratulate the team for proudly representing Lisburn & Castlereagh and wish all the athletes every success as they prepare for their next competition.”

Alderman James Tinsley, Chairman of the Leisure & Community Development Committee, who hosted the reception alongside the Deputy Mayor added, “The Council is extremely proud of all the athletes, coaches, officials and support staff who represented both Lisburn & Castlereagh and Team Northern Ireland at this year’s Commonwealth Games.  I would particularly like to commend boxers Kurt Walker and Kristina O’Hara who won two Silver medals in boxing, a fantastic achievement given the elite competition they faced.

“The Council area has a proud history of sporting success and our representation on this year`s Northern Ireland Commonwealth Games Team highlights the strength of our sports clubs and coaching, which provide opportunities for excellence and development across a wide range of sporting disciplines."
