August 8, 2016

Lisburn & Castlereagh City Council was delighted to welcome members of the New Zealand Police Pipe Band and the Royal Scottish Pipe Band Association to a reception hosted by the Deputy Mayor, Alderman Stephen Martin.

The reception was held in advance of the Lisburn & Castlereagh Pipe Band Championships scheduled for Moira Demesne on 6th August, which the New Zealand Police Pipe Band was participating in.

Deputy Mayor, Alderman Stephen Martin, speaking at the reception, said: “I am delighted to have the opportunity to host this reception in advance of this weekend’s Pipe Band Championships.  There is a long standing relationship between the Council and the RSPBA that has been developed during the course of the joint staging of such championships within the Council area over recent years.

“Such championships are of a high calibre and this is evidenced by the willingness of the New Zealand Police Pipe Band to travel half-way round the world to participate at the competition in Moira Demesne in advance of the World Championships in Glasgow,” said Alderman Martin.

The Council has a strong connection with New Zealand through its Friendship Agreement with Whanganui and the local Ballance House which is run by The Ulster New Zealand Trust.
