Council Delegation Meets with Department About Key Road Improvements

March 29, 2018

A cross-party delegation of Elected Members from Lisburn & Castlereagh City Council and Senior Officers recently met with Peter May, Department of Infrastructure Permanent Secretary and his senior officials to discuss road infrastructure improvements at the Knockmore/Ballinderry/Prince William Road junctions.

The meeting was of importance to the Council as it was an opportunity to highlight concerns about the junctions in question and the high number of accidents that have happened at them.

Dr Theresa Donaldson, Chief Executive of the Council, said: “We welcome the opportunity to discuss directly with the Permanent Secretary the need for investment to improve these key road junctions.  Over the years there has been extensive development in this area of Lisburn North making them unfit for purpose; and with more planned development now is the time to work in partnership with each other and developers to improve the road infrastructure.

“All parties at the meeting discussed in detail the complex history of the housing developments and the planning history of lands within Knockmore, Ballinderry and Prince William.  The Council will be taking forward a joint approach with those developers planning to build in these areas to deliver any agreed improvements.  The safety of road users in the Lisburn Castlereagh area is important to the Council and it looks forward to working closely with the Department of Infrastructure on this matter.”

Lisburn & Castlereagh City Council will host a meeting in partnership with the Department for Infrastructure in early April to engage with developers and their agents with the goal to be agreement of the next steps and a timetable for the improvements.
