Council congratulates Warrington Town and Crewe United on Peace Cup Match
August 15, 2016
Links with Crewe United Football Club, Lisburn & Castlereagh City Council, Warrington Town and Warrington Borough Council were again strengthened following the recent Peace Cup Football Match.
The Peace Cup arose in the aftermath of the tragic bombs in Warrington in 1993 which claimed the lives of two young children, Tim Parry and Jonathan Ball. Crewe United was the first group to visit Warrington after the explosion to pay respects to those killed and injured and the relationship since then has grown beyond the club to include Lisburn & Castlereagh City Council and Warrington Borough Council.
To cheer the local side on, Elected Members Alderman Paul Porter and Councillor Rhoda Walker travelled to Warrington for the Peace Cup weekend.
The match resulted in a reversal of last year’s score with a 2-0 victory for Warrington Town who were warmly congratulated by the Crewe United Team.
Alderman Paul Porter said: “Many congratulations to Warrington Town. Last year it was Crewe United that lifted the trophy and next year the team will be looking to regain the winner’s title. The welcome and good relationship between the teams is really very special; as is the relationship with the Councils. It is a privilege and honour to be a part of this; on which Cllr Walker and I would concur.
“Warrington delegates have visited Lisburn many times over the years and the Council is proud of its association with the people of Warrington. I would like to give a big thank you to Warrington Borough Council and its Mayor, Cllr Faisal Rashid for welcoming the Lisburn group, for the Mayoral reception, and of course many thanks to Crewe United,” he concluded.
