Council Celebrates International Women's Day

February 28, 2018

The Council has two public events taking place on Thursday 8th March to celebrate International Women’s Day 2018 and embracing the theme of #PressforProgress and we would like to invite residents to attend.

Members of the business community are invited to attend the ‘Empowerment and Making it Happen’ event at Café Vic Ryn form 8.45am; and the event at the Bridge Community Centre from 9.30am – 1.30pm is open to everyone.

Lisburn & Castlereagh City Council also recently launched its ‘Ladies Group’ marking the Centenary of the Representation of the People 1918.

The Deputy Mayor, Councillor Hazel Legge, who is leading the Ladies Group, speaking about these events, said: “The Council is very pleased to be hosting two events to celebrate International Women’s Day and empower local ladies to remain confident in their professional relationships and celebrate the achievements of women over the last 100 years.

“In addition to the 8th March events we will be working with our partners and local stakeholders to host events which honour the women who fought hard for the rights we have today.  As Deputy Mayor I am fortunate to be in the position to highlight all the good work that has been done and inspire good work to be carried out in the future,” she concluded.

Dr Theresa Donaldson, Chief Executive of Lisburn & Castlereagh City Council, added: “I would encourage local ladies to register for our upcoming events on the 8th March as soon as possible as they are proving popular.  The speakers at the ‘Empowerment and Make it Happen’ event include Helen Allen from House of Colour and Carmel McKinney OBE at Café Vic Ryn and Joan Carberry and Billy Dixon will speak at the Bridge Community Centre.  As a council we are keen to encourage women to be strong leaders and look forward to offering them the opportunity to hear from inspirational women across the Lisburn Castlereagh area.”
