Council Celebrates International Compost Awareness Week

May 5, 2016

Lisburn & Castlereagh City Council is celebrating International Compost Awareness Week 2016 from Monday 2nd – Sunday 9th May by offering home composters to its residents for £7 each, which will allow householders to compost their own biodegradable waste.

The Council’s recycling centres are well utilised by residents and those who recycle items at these centres during Compost Week will receive one free bag of compost.  These bags will be allocated to residents when they bring materials for recycling.

The Council’s three recycling centres are located at:

  • The Cutts, Derriaghy, BT17 9HN
  • 6 Comber Road, Carryduff, BT8 8AN
  • Dromara Road, Drumlough, Hillsborough, BT26 6QA

Councillor Brian Hanvey, Chairman of the Council’s Environmental Services Committee, said: “Celebrating Compost Week is an excellent initiative to engage with residents and encourage them to keep up the good work and recycle food waste to ensure a tremendous success citywide.  Through its Facebook page the Council is running a competition to see how residents use their brown kitchen caddy and have the chance to win a family pass to the LeisurePlex and a family pass to Dundonald International Ice Bowl.  Please be sure to enter at facebook.com/LisburnCastlereagh.

“I am delighted that the Council is able to offer home composters at a reduced price of £7 to residents during International Compost Awareness Week.  These simple to use composters offer an excellent opportunity for residents to create their own compost for use in flowerpots and rose beds.

“I would encourage as many residents as possible to consider availing of this offer as about 30% of household waste can be turned into compost.  If you want to learn a bit more about composting then please attend the Composting and Wormery Information talk in Maghaberry Community Centre on Friday 6th May from 10.30am – 12.00 noon.

“Composting makes sense for both the environment and your pocket as it returns vital organic matter and nutrients to the soil and it reduces the amount of landfill waste, therefore, reducing the production of harmful pollutants and greenhouse gases.”

The Council is looking forward to providing local households with a free bag of compost each when they recycle at the recycling centres during Compost Week.

Councillor Hanvey added: “During this week the Council will also be offering bags of compost to the local schools that are part of its Zero Food Waste initiative.  This initiative returns useful compost to schools who have segregated and recycled waste food using the Council’s food waste collection service.  Schools can use this compost to grow improve their gardens or to grow plants or flowers or crops from seed.  Each school that takes part will also be entered into a draw to win a wormery or tumbling composter,” concluded Councillor Hanvey.
