Council Celebrates 70 Years of the NHS

July 4, 2018

Lisburn & Castlereagh City Council is proud to celebrate the 70th birthday of the NHS this year; and will be lighting its civic headquarters, Lagan Valley Island up blue to mark the occasion on Thursday 5th July.

Throughout June, Health & Social Care (HSC) organisations in Northern Ireland will be holding a number of events to highlight the key issues facing the health and social care sector in the years ahead.

Councillor Nathan Anderson, Chairman of the Council’s Corporate Services Committee, speaking about the 70th birthday of the NHS, said: “Everyone across the Lisburn Castlereagh area has availed of the NHS and I am sure that many are surprised that it has only been 70 years since this public health service was founded.  Within the Council area we have two hospitals, Lagan Valley Hospital and the Ulster Hospital, which have provided vital care to local families over the years and spanning several generations.  These include maternity services, outpatient care, accident & emergency, specialist surgeries, an out of hours GP service and mental health support services.

“However, it is not only the 70th birthday of the NHS that we are celebrating. As a council we also wish to acknowledge the dedication of the doctors, nurses, auxiliary staff, porters and administration staff that all part a role in ensuring we receive quality care.  Each one of them has a part to play in ensuring patients are in the right place at the right time and we thank them for their dedication and services,” said Councillor Anderson.
