Commonwealth Big Lunch Get-Together at Bridge Community Centre

April 27, 2018

Community groups from across Lisburn and Castlereagh gathered together on Friday 20 April 2018 at the Bridge Community Centre, Lisburn to celebrate the Commonwealth Big Lunch.

The Big Lunch is an idea born from the Eden Project and funded by the National Lottery that encourages people to get together and create stronger and happier communities. This project aims to forge new friendships and encourages people to think of new ideas and projects of their own to tackle the issues that matter the most to them. Last year, the Big Lunch had over 9 million people take part nationwide to help celebrate community spirit and friendship within their local areas.

In attendance at the Commonwealth Big Lunch was the Mayor of Lisburn & Castlereagh City Council, Councillor Tim Morrow, Councillor Rhoda Walker, Vice Chair of the Leisure & Community Development Committee, representatives from the Council as well as a range of Community Groups across Lisburn and Castlereagh. Attendees enjoyed an afternoon of delicious food, great conversation and a musical showcase from Lynne McAllister.

Speaking about the Big Lunch, the Mayor commented “The Commonwealth Big Lunch is a great opportunity for people to network amongst likeminded individuals and share their experience and stories of being part of the Commonwealth, being part of Northern Ireland and most importantly being part of Lisburn & Castlereagh.

He continued “I would encourage everyone across the Council area to get involved with their own Big Lunch this year. There is a wealth of materials available online at www.thebiglunch.com that will help community groups, like those in attendance today, to run their own lunch within their local area.”

Councillor Walker added “The event held at the Bridge Community Centre in Lisburn has been a great success connecting communities throughout the area. It is a fantastic initiative that makes communities grow stronger while increasing the happiness and wellbeing of people within them.”

The Commonwealth Big Lunch team is encouraging people to run their own Big Lunch events within their local community. The Big Lunch can be anything from a small garden gathering to a big get together in your local street or park, run at a time that suits you.
