Citizenship Ceremonies recommence with the introduction of new Virtual and Private Options

Lisburn & Castlereagh City Council has recommenced citizenship ceremonies following a suspension of the service as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic. For the first time in Northern Ireland, these services can now be conducted virtually or through a private ceremony.  The traditional group ceremonies will still take place bi-monthly.

Alderman Paul Porter, Corporate Services Committee Chairman, speaking at a group ceremony last week, said: “Citizenship ceremonies mark the conclusion of an important process for those who have been granted citizenship in Northern Ireland and Great Britain by the Home Office. It is important all new citizens are encouraged to feel a sense of belonging to the wider community; and the council is proud to provide special ceremonies to support this.

“We are delighted to once again be offering citizenship ceremonies. We hope our new virtual and private options will provide flexibility and choice as well as allowing the service to continue to operate during the pandemic.

“All ceremonies are officiated by one of the eight Lord Lieutenants based in Northern Ireland who are delighted to welcome new citizens into the community.”
