Carers Week 2022 (6-12th June): 'Make caring visible, valued and supported'

June 5, 2022

Mayor Martin would like to recognise the valuable contribution that unpaid carers make to families and the Lisburn and Castlereagh community.

During his term the Mayor has met many carers of all ages and backgrounds.  Carers provide unpaid help to family and friends who have additional needs, mental or physical illness, addiction, or who need extra help as they grow older.

Speaking about the contribution made by local carers, the Mayor, said: “The theme this year for Carers Week is timely given the COVID-19 pandemic without a doubt changed both the amount and level of care many needed.  More people than ever before took on new caring responsibilities for their relatives and friends needing support.

“I commend our carers across Lisburn & Castlereagh for the selfless work they do to help a loved one.  The efforts you make are vital & not unseen.  You are very much part of our community.  The challenges you face should not be underestimated by anyone. You have my respect and that of the wider community.

“Throughout Carers Week and going forward I would urge everyone to touch base with any carers you know to listen to what they have to say.  Please make sure they know support for them is available, where and when they need it, to help lift a little bit of the responsibility they carry for others.”

Caring without the right information and support can be tough.
