Bin Collections Affected By Parked Cars

September 4, 2018

Lisburn & Castlereagh City Council would like to remind commuters and residents to be considerate when they park their cars in streets across the Lisburn Castlereagh area.

There are a number of streets across the area that the Council’s refuse collection vehicles have trouble accessing to empty residents bins due to cars parked on both sides of the road.

Councillor Janet Gray MBE, Chair of the Council’s Environmental Services Committee speaking about the problem said:  “Parked cars can affect the ability of refuse collection vehicles getting along streets and around developments. If we are unable to access an area on the given collection day we will endeavour to return the following day to collect any missed bins.  However, should access still be blocked we may not be able to empty the bin until the next scheduled collection day.

“We appreciate that people do need to make use of on street parking which can sometimes be due to on-property parking not being available, to be close to a train station or to a place of work.  The Council is asking that you park responsibly and don’t block access which prohibits refuse vehicles accessing the area. It is usually obvious by the presence of bins in the area that it is the planned day for collection so please check before leaving your vehicle and ensure you park to allow as much space as possible on the road to allow our vehicle to access the bins.”

Alderman James Tinsley, Vice-Chair of the Environmental Services Committee added: “The Council has scheduled bin collection routes and is aware of those areas that are repeatedly causing problems due to access issues.  If car owners can be considerate of others when parking that would help to assist with this matter and ensure we can empty bins on the scheduled days.

“The Council does work with the Department for Infrastructure and other utility providers to ensure planned works in the area do not interrupt services however should there be planned works by other contractors they should notify the Council in advance to allow it to make arrangements to temporarily amend the collection route to accommodate the planned works and collect our residents’ bins.”
