BBQ Sunday Social is a sizzling success for Lisburn & Castlereagh City Council!
November 15, 2019
Lisburn & Castlereagh City Council has this weekend proved that BBQing isn’t just for the summer, with the great success of its first BBQ Sunday Social. All-Ireland BBQ Champion, Smokin Yankee Michael Duffy, led the event; featuring Great British Menu winning chef Chris Fearon both in partnership with Moira based Great Outdoors BBQ Co, who hosted the event in their picturesque courtyard.
The council’s latest unique food event took place as part of its 2019 Food & Drink Programme and saw over 50 ticketholders learn all about the ‘low and slow’ versus the more traditional grilling BBQ method we are all more familiar with in this part of the world. The cooks chose locally sourced seasonal meats and veg to showcase how BBQing can be enjoyed all year round with the menu featuring slow cooked 9 hour smoked turkey, 6 hour whole sugar pit bacon racks, and various speciality sausages with bavette steak and spatchcock chicken on the grill.
Reflecting on the BBQ Sunday Social, Mayor of Lisburn & Castlereagh City Council, Councillor Alan Givan said, "The BBQ Sunday Social was a great reflection of the diversity of this year’s Food & Drink Programme. We are so pleased to have had the opportunity to host such a unique, seasonal event and partner with experts like Michael and Chris to teach guests the culinary art of BBQing no matter what the season. We would also like to thank Great Outdoors BBQ Co who very kindly hosted us in their stunning country courtyard; and allowing the cooks to use their extensive range of specialist BBQs, which really added to the enjoyment of the day. Without their hospitality the event just wouldn’t have been possible.”
Guests to the BBQ Sunday Social had the opportunity to enjoy the delicious food on offer from local producers including Hannan Meats, Carnbrooke Meats, Buchanan’s Turkey and Hellbent, with a wide range of seasonal sides including BBQed vegetables such as roasted maple parsnips, hispi cabbage and slow cooked pit beans finishing their afternoon with pumpkin pie. Needless to say the food on offer was sufficiently comforting to keep all the guests warm on a crisp November afternoon.
